Microsoft Office 2010 Zip Files

Running XP professional SP3 and recently upgraded to Office 2010 student edition. I have many Excel files stored on a server for access by our clients. They are given a table of contents with file descriptions that includes a hyperlink for each so they can access individal files. Since I upgraded to Office 2010, I've got two separate problems: 1. The files saved with the default.xlsx extension no longer open - they are now zip files that contain lots of folders/files containing jibberish - no worksheets. If I try to access the files saved with the.xls extension from my Office 2010 machine nothing happens. It says it is opening and you can see the path to the file, but it just stops there.

You can't save or open a file. As an aside, if I try to access the.xls documents from this same table of contents that has been saved as a PDF, I CAN open or save the document.

Just not from the table of contents that has been saved as an Excel file (.xls or.xlsx). FYI: the new 'x' format files really are ZIP files simply named with the XLSX (or DOCX etc) extension so the correct program recognizes them to open them properly.

For DOCX files, you can use this knowledge to recover the content from a damaged file, I don't know if it would work for a spreadsheet.
